Quick gluing of small and medium aluminum surfaces
In this case, very fast cyanoacrylate adhesives otherwise instantaneous. They allow for very strong connections, but they require very well-matched surfaces and are relatively stiff, they will not level the stresses of the materials.
Flexible aluminum bonding and sealing
Flexible joints on metals such as aluminum can be obtained using silicone adhesives, MS polymers and flexible polyurethanes. Silicone adhesives will be relatively chemically resistant and flexible, but do not provide high bonding strength. Some of them have very good temperature resistance. Polyurethanes are relatively cheap, but they are not resistant to UV rays and do not withstand high temperatures. MS polymers can achieve higher strength and are resistant to weathering. In the case of gluing very large surfaces, chemically curing two-component adhesives should be used so that the product hardens well in the middle of the joint.
Durable aluminum structural bonding -epoxy adhesives and methacrylic
If you want to obtain very strong joints resistant to high temperatures, the use of two-component epoxy or methacrylate adhesives will be a good solution. These types of adhesives allow for high shear strength and vibration resistance. Epoxy glue has better chemical resistance and higher stiffness, while methacrylic glue will be relatively more flexible and will work better in bonding aluminum with plastics.
MELKIB MMA POWER 10 - durable structural methacrylic adhesive for aluminium, metals and plastics
An excellent, all-round, high-quality adhesive for aluminum and other metals will be Melkib MMA Power 10, which is also great for plastics, which increases its versatility. The chemical curing mechanism minimizes the influence of external factors on the curing process (of course not 100%). The adhesive allows for extremely strong aluminum bonding, and the connections are resistant to vibrations. If you are looking for a very fast and at the same time strong and versatile two-component adhesive for aluminum, then a good choice will be -ml25-g/3168" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MELKIB MMA POWER 3.
Bonding of large aluminum surfaces - choose two-component polyurethanes, MS polymers or silicone adhesives
If we want to glue a large aluminum sheet or other element made of this material, two-component polyurethane adhesives, which can be applied with a notched trowel or spatula, will be perfect. Then we can be sure that the glue will harden inside the joint and not only on the edges.
Bonding aluminum with rubber
For gluing rubber to aluminum, you can use solvent adhesives available in a tube, spray or in larger packages, an example of such an adhesive is Teroson 2444 or Pattex Universal Classic. For small rubber elements glued to this metal, cyanoacrylate (instant) adhesives will be perfect, especially +480" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Loctite 480, which has an extended curing time - it allows you to position elements, especially when gluing a larger element. This glue sticks rubber to aluminum very strongly, it will be a good choice for more heavily loaded joints.
Bonding of aluminum with plexiglass/polycarbonate
Two-component acrylic adhesives are perfect for gluing display cases/windows made of transparent polycarbonate or plexiglass. They allow to obtain a durable and very aesthetic joint. Cyanoacrylate adhesives can also be used to connect smaller surfaces, preferably in gel form.
How to glue aluminum well?
As with any gluing, good preparation of the substrate for gluing is crucial. Aluminum should be matted with papabrasive and then properly degreased. You can use pure acetone or isopropanol for this purpose and low dust cleaning cloth. A better alternative will be dedicated degreasers, such as Melkib Premium Cleaner. After degreasing, you can start gluing. Connecting aluminum with the second glued surface should be carried out carefully and the elements should be precisely positioned. Then, immobilize them until the initial curing of the adhesive - depending on the selected adhesive, it will be several minutes to several hours. Bonded aluminum can be fully loaded after 24 hours, which is the time needed for most adhesives to fully cure. In the case of contact adhesives, aluminum should be smeared with adhesive (alternatively, spray it) and wait until the solvent evaporates and then press both surfaces together. It is important to apply the adhesive to both glued elements.
Bonding of painted, powder coated and anodized aluminum - are there contraindications?
In general, there is no problem with gluing aluminum covered with paint, varnish or anodized. The most important thing is to prepare the surface well - matting and degreasing the aluminum elements, then you can start gluing.
Bonding with two-component adhesives
If you choose two-component adhesives, pay particular attention to the manufacturer's instructions and carefully follow the recommended mixing ratios of the adhesive and hardener. In the case of aluminum adhesives in cartridges, before installing the mixer, align the ingredients - squeeze some glue onto a cloth. Then attach the mixing nozzle and extrude the adhesive into the aluminum until the two components mix well. Only then can you start gluing.
Why is it worth gluing aluminum?
Bonding of aluminum allows for aesthetic connections, as opposed to screwing or riveting. In addition, the adhesive bond transfers loads more evenly. The advantage of gluing over welding is the possibility of joining surfaces made of different materials, e.g. aluminum with plastics, aluminum with rubber, aluminum with glass, etc. When choosing the method of joining, it is worth paying attention to the environmental conditions in which it will stay. For example, the high working temperature of the adhesive may cause its degradation. In this case, choose the proven high-temperature adhesives for aluminum from the Loctite product range.
Use of adhesives for aluminum
Aluminum bonding is used in particular for applications that require high aesthetics of the connection and even load distribution. Additionally for joining aluminum with plastics and other materials. Gluing is a good choice if the connection will not have to be removable, if so, screwing or riveting should be chosen.
