Note!

Fluorescent tape will not glow in total darkness by itself. This is because fluorescent materials require a source of ultraviolet (UV) radiation or other strong light to emit their characteristic glow. As soon as the light source is removed (for example, when the UV lamp is turned off), the fluorescence effect disappears almost immediately.

If you want a tape that actually "glows" in the dark on its own (without additional UV lighting), look for products that are called phosphorescent or photoluminescent. This type of tape is able to absorb light (sunlight or artificial) and then emit it in low light conditions or complete darkness. The difference between fluorescence and phosphorescence is that phosphorescent materials (e.g. paints, stickers, tapes) "store" light energy and gradually release it as a visible glow that lasts for a long time after the light source is turned off.

Fluorescence vs. Phosphorescence (photoluminescence) - differences
Fluorescence

Requires a continuous, external light source, usually UV radiation. The material glows only when such radiation is incident. After cutting off the ultraviolet light, the emission disappears immediately.

Phosphorescence (photoluminescence)

The material "charges" when illuminated (by the sun or artificial light). After turning off the light, it releases the stored energy in the form of visible glow. The effect can last from a few minutes to even a dozen or so hours, depending on the quality and type of pigment.

Why does it matter?

If you need tape for markings in dark rooms (e.g. corridors, stairs, emergency exits), phosphorescent/photoluminescent tape will be a better choice. Fluorescent tape will work well in situations where there is special UV lighting (e.g. in music clubs, theaters, concerts or outdoor events with ultraviolet lighting).
