AVIA Hypoid EP 85W-140 20L API GL-5 gear oil
Description
AVIA Hypoid EP 85W-140 20L – gear oil for heavily loaded hypoid transmissions
AVIA Hypoid EP 85W-140 is a mineral gear oil intended for heavily loaded drive axles with hypoid gearing, particularly designs with a large offset between the axes of the mating gears. The product has an SAE 85W-140 viscosity grade and meets the API GL-5 performance level.
Its specially selected additive package supports protection of transmission components against wear and corrosion. The oil may be used in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, buses, construction machinery and agricultural machinery, provided that the vehicle or equipment manufacturer specifies this viscosity grade and performance level.
Applications
AVIA Hypoid EP 85W-140 is intended primarily for heavily loaded power transmission systems. The manufacturer indicates the following applications:
- heavily loaded drive axles,
- axles with hypoid gears,
- hypoid gears with a large axle offset,
- intermediate steering gears,
- passenger cars and commercial vehicles,
- buses,
- construction machinery,
- agricultural machinery.
Key features of AVIA Hypoid EP 85W-140
- API GL-5 performance level – designed for heavily loaded gear systems requiring this specification.
- SAE 85W-140 viscosity grade – a high-viscosity oil for suitably designed transmission systems.
- Mineral oil base – formulated using selected mineral base oils.
- Extreme-pressure additive system – supports protection of mating transmission components under high loads.
- Wear and corrosion protection – properties confirmed in the manufacturer's technical documentation.
- 20-litre pack – suitable for commercial vehicles, machinery and service operations.
When to choose this gear oil
AVIA Hypoid EP 85W-140 is suitable when the vehicle, axle or transmission manufacturer requires a lubricant with an SAE 85W-140 viscosity grade and an API GL-5 performance level. It is particularly intended for heavily loaded hypoid gears operating in drive axles.
Before changing the oil, check the vehicle operating manual or the technical documentation of the transmission. A similar viscosity alone does not confirm that the oil is suitable for a particular mechanism.
Important information before use
API GL-5 oil should not be treated as a universal replacement for every gear oil. In particular, not every manual gearbox or synchronised transmission is designed for a lubricant of this performance level.
The manufacturer does not describe this product as a Limited Slip oil. Limited-slip differentials require a lubricant with the frictional properties and specification stated by the vehicle manufacturer.

FAQ
Is AVIA Hypoid EP 85W-140 suitable for a rear axle?
Yes. The product is intended for heavily loaded drive axles and final drives with hypoid gears. The vehicle manufacturer must, however, specify an SAE 85W-140 oil meeting API GL-5.
Can this oil be used in commercial vehicles and agricultural machinery?
Yes. The manufacturer lists commercial vehicles, buses, construction machinery and agricultural machinery among the intended applications.
Is AVIA Hypoid EP 85W-140 suitable for a manual gearbox?
Only when the gearbox manufacturer explicitly permits an API GL-5 oil with an SAE 85W-140 viscosity grade. It must not be used as a replacement for GL-4 oil without confirmation in the vehicle documentation.
Is API GL-5 better than API GL-4?
GL-5 and GL-4 describe different performance levels and applications. GL-5 is not automatically a suitable replacement for GL-4. The transmission manufacturer's requirements are decisive.
Is this product suitable for a Limited Slip differential?
AVIA Hypoid EP 85W-140 is not described as a Limited Slip oil. A limited-slip differential requires a lubricant with the appropriate LS specification and frictional properties.
