LOXEAL 85-21 – high-strength anaerobic adhesive for retaining bearings and bushings
LOXEAL 85-21 is a single-component, high-strength anaerobic adhesive designed for retaining cylindrical metal components and locking or sealing threaded connections. It is particularly suitable for securing bearings, bushings, gears and shaft-to-hub assemblies where resistance to vibration, mechanical loads and unwanted component movement is essential.
The adhesive cures in the absence of oxygen between metal surfaces. Once cured, it forms a high-strength mechanical connection resistant to oils, water, gases and many chemicals. Its operating temperature range is -55°C to +150°C.
Applications of LOXEAL 85-21
The adhesive is intended for metal assemblies requiring strong and durable retention. Typical applications include:
- Bearing retention – securing bearing rings against rotation or movement within metal housings.
- Bushing and hub assembly – strengthening cylindrical joints subjected to mechanical loads.
- Gear and drive component assembly – helping prevent loosening caused by vibration.
- Thread locking and sealing – protecting threaded connections against self-loosening and supporting sealing performance.
- Machinery maintenance and repair – assembling and retaining metal mechanical components.
Key benefits of LOXEAL 85-21 anaerobic adhesive
- High mechanical strength – shear strength of 25–35 N/mm² according to ISO 10123.
- Fast curing – typical handling time on steel is 2–5 minutes under the manufacturer's specified test conditions.
- Gap filling up to 0.20 mm – accommodates small assembly clearances and machining tolerances.
- Resistance to vibration and impact – helps prevent components from loosening during operation.
- Chemical resistance – the cured adhesive resists water, oils, gases, hydrocarbons and many chemicals.
- Application inspection – fluorescence under blue light helps identify the presence of adhesive.
When should you choose LOXEAL 85-21?
LOXEAL 85-21 is suitable when a mechanical fit requires additional retention and the assembly must withstand considerable loads while remaining stable during machine operation.
It is designed for cylindrical metal assemblies with small clearances and for threaded metal connections requiring high strength. Because it forms a strong bond, it is not the preferred choice for assemblies requiring frequent and easy disassembly.
How to apply LOXEAL 85-21
Surface preparation: thoroughly remove old adhesive residues, dirt and oil from the components, then degrease the bonding surfaces.
Application: apply an appropriate amount of adhesive to one of the metal mating surfaces. For cylindrical assemblies, application to the external cylindrical surface is recommended. Assemble the components and allow the adhesive to cure.
Curing: curing speed depends on the substrate, joint clearance and ambient temperature. For passive surfaces or low-temperature conditions, the manufacturer permits using LOXEAL Activator 11 to accelerate curing.
Important considerations before use
The adhesive is primarily intended for metal assemblies. It is not recommended for systems containing pure oxygen, chlorine or other strong oxidizing agents. Unverified contact with thermoplastics should also be avoided because stress cracking may occur.
For new applications, carry out trials using the actual components and verify the requirements relating to mechanical loads, assembly clearances and curing times.

Safety information
Read the current Safety Data Sheet and product label before use. The product contains methacrylate components that may cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Use protective equipment appropriate for the application and avoid direct contact with skin and eyes.
FAQ – frequently asked questions
Is LOXEAL 85-21 suitable for retaining bearings in housings?
Yes. This is one of its primary applications. Once cured, the adhesive helps prevent bearing rings from rotating or moving within metal housings.
Can LOXEAL 85-21 be used on threaded connections?
Yes. It is also designed for high-strength locking and sealing of metal threaded assemblies. Its high mechanical strength should be considered when planning future disassembly.
Can LOXEAL 85-21 be used on stainless steel?
Passive surfaces, including some stainless steel grades, may slow anaerobic curing. LOXEAL Activator 11 can be used to accelerate the process. Testing on the actual joint is recommended.
Can LOXEAL 85-21 fill large assembly gaps?
The maximum specified gap filling is 0.20 mm. If the clearance is greater, consider another retaining technology or an adhesive specifically designed for larger gaps.
Can an assembly bonded with LOXEAL 85-21 be dismantled?
The adhesive produces a high-strength joint, so disassembly may require suitable tools or controlled heating. It is not intended for connections requiring regular disassembly.
How long should the joint cure before loading?
Functional strength is usually reached in 1–3 hours, while full curing of cylindrical assemblies may take 24–36 hours. Actual curing time depends on the substrates, clearance and temperature.
LOXEAL 85-21 provides high-strength retention for metal mechanical components where long-term joint stability and resistance to operating conditions are important.
