Product description
Loctite 480 20 g — rubber-toughened cyanoacrylate adhesive
Loctite 480 is a one-component black instant adhesive based on ethyl cyanoacrylate and toughened with rubber. It is designed for joints requiring increased flexibility as well as improved resistance to peel, impact and shear loads. The adhesive has low viscosity and is best suited for bonding close-fitting parts made of metals, elastomers and plastics.
IMPORTANT — cyanoacrylate adhesive
Danger. Bonds skin and eyes in seconds. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid breathing vapours and contact with skin and eyes. Use suitable hand and eye protection during application.
What is Loctite 480 used for?
Loctite 480 is intended for fast bonding of closely fitted components. The manufacturer identifies metals, elastomers and plastics as the key materials. Rubber toughening increases the joint's resistance to impact and peel loads compared with a standard rigid cyanoacrylate bond.
The product is particularly useful where an instant adhesive is expected to provide not only fast fixture but also increased mechanical resistance to impact, peel and shear loads.
Key properties
- one-component cyanoacrylate technology — no mixing required,
- rubber toughening for increased flexibility and impact resistance,
- black colour for easy identification of the product and bond line,
- low viscosity suitable for small gaps,
- very good peel, impact and shear strength,
- designed for metals, elastomers and plastics,
- operating temperature range from -40°C to +100°C.
How to use Loctite 480
Bonding surfaces should be clean and degreased. The product provides the best results with narrow gaps — Henkel's technical documentation indicates approximately 0.05 mm as the condition for optimum performance.
The adhesive cures by reacting with moisture present on the bonding surfaces and in the surrounding air. Fixture time depends on the substrate, gap size and humidity. For steel, current manufacturer data indicate approximately 90 seconds, while other substrates may require shorter or longer times. Curing continues after initial fixture, and full chemical resistance develops after at least 24 hours.
If faster curing is required in a larger gap, the manufacturer allows the use of a suitable activator. A preliminary test is recommended because an activator may reduce final bond strength.

Storage
Store the product in its original sealed container in a cool, dry place. Henkel recommends a storage temperature of 2°C to 8°C. Before use, allow the adhesive to reach ambient temperature. Do not return used material to the original container in order to avoid contamination.
Safety
Loctite 480 causes skin irritation and serious eye irritation and may cause respiratory irritation. The product is also harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Avoid breathing vapours, release to the environment and contact with skin and eyes. Wear protective gloves and eye protection. Full safety information is provided in the current safety data sheet.
The product is not recommended for use in pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems and should not be used with chlorine or other strongly oxidising materials.

FAQ
Is Loctite 480 more flexible than a standard cyanoacrylate adhesive?
Yes. The product is rubber-toughened and designed for joints requiring increased flexibility and resistance to peel and impact loads.
Which materials can be bonded with Loctite 480?
The manufacturer primarily identifies metals, elastomers and plastics. For critical applications, a preliminary test on the actual materials and under the intended service conditions is recommended.
How fast does Loctite 480 set?
Fixture time depends on the substrate, gap and humidity. Current Henkel data indicate approximately 90 seconds on steel. Fixture time should not be confused with full cure — full chemical resistance develops over at least 24 hours.
What gap can Loctite 480 fill?
Current manufacturer data specify a maximum gap fill of 0.18 mm. According to the TDS, optimum results are achieved with very close-fitting parts and a gap of approximately 0.05 mm.
What is the operating temperature range of Loctite 480?
The manufacturer specifies an operating temperature range from -40°C to +100°C.
How should Loctite 480 be stored?
Henkel recommends storing the original sealed container in a cool, dry place at 2°C to 8°C. Before use, allow the product to reach ambient temperature.
What should I do if skin becomes bonded?
Do not forcibly pull bonded skin apart. The manufacturer recommends soaking the affected area in warm soapy water and gently separating the skin. Detailed first-aid instructions for contact with the eyes, skin or other body parts are provided in the current safety data sheet.
