LOCTITE AA 3494 – transparent UV/VIS acrylic adhesive for glass and metals
LOCTITE AA 3494 is a one-component transparent medium-viscosity acrylic adhesive cured by UV and/or visible light. It is designed primarily for rapid bonding, sealing and potting of glass components and for joints combining glass with other materials.
When exposed to a suitable light source, the adhesive can cure within seconds and forms an impact-resistant bond. The cured material also provides very good resistance to prolonged humidity and water immersion. Light-activated curing allows the bonding process to begin after the components have been correctly positioned.
Applications of LOCTITE AA 3494
LOCTITE AA 3494 is primarily intended for bonding glass to glass and glass to most metals. It can also be used for sealing and potting applications provided that the joint design allows sufficient light energy to reach the adhesive layer.
Typical applications indicated by the manufacturer include decorative glass with rough surfaces, moulded glass components, glassware and automotive lighting components. The adhesive is also suitable for ceramic materials.
Henkel technical documentation also includes test results for glass bonded to polycarbonate, PVC and ABS. When using the adhesive with plastics, however, the specific material grade should be checked for compatibility and susceptibility to stress cracking.
What distinguishes LOCTITE AA 3494
On-demand curing – curing starts when the adhesive is exposed to a suitable light source, allowing the components to be positioned correctly before the joint is fixed.
UV and visible light curing – LOCTITE AA 3494 can be cured using appropriate UV and/or visible light.
One-component formulation – the adhesive is ready for application and does not require two components to be mixed.
Medium viscosity – according to the technical documentation, viscosity is 5,000–7,000 mPa·s at 25°C.
Durable bond – after correct curing, the adhesive produces an impact-resistant joint with very good resistance to prolonged humidity and water exposure.
When to choose LOCTITE AA 3494
LOCTITE AA 3494 is particularly suitable for applications involving glass where rapid and controlled curing after correct positioning of the components is important. Light-curing technology can also be useful in production processes where the time between adhesive application and the next assembly operation needs to be kept short.
An essential requirement for this technology is that sufficient light can reach the adhesive layer. Joint design should therefore take into account the light transmission properties of the materials and access of the light source to the bond line.
How to use LOCTITE AA 3494
Surfaces to be bonded should be clean and free from grease. Apply the adhesive to the prepared surface, correctly position the components and then expose the bond line to a suitable light source.
Cure speed and cure depth depend on the intensity and spectrum of the light source, distance between the lamp and the joint, exposure time, adhesive layer thickness and the light transmission properties of the material through which the radiation passes.
For adhesive curing between two substrates, Henkel recommends radiation intensity of at least 40 mW/cm² measured at the bond line. A higher UV intensity is required when a dry surface is required on an exposed layer of adhesive.
The product is light-sensitive. Exposure to daylight, UV radiation and artificial light should therefore be minimised during storage and application.
Important information before use
When bonding thermoplastics, the temperature generated during light exposure should be controlled. The specific plastic grade should also be checked for susceptibility to stress cracking when exposed to the liquid adhesive.
The adhesive should not be assumed to be compatible with every plastic solely on the basis of the polymer type. Before implementation in serial production, the joint should be evaluated under the actual application and operating conditions.
LOCTITE AA 3494 is not recommended for use in pure oxygen or oxygen-rich environments. It should also not be selected as a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidising materials.
