Gluing and repairing car windows - how to properly replace the glass

Have you ever wondered how it is possible that a car window, despite its enormous weight and the forces encountered while driving, remains solidly and immovably attached to the body of our vehicle? Have you noticed that in cars, windows, and especially the windshield, are an important structural element of the vehicle, affecting its rigidity? Gluing car windows is a topic that may seem a bit complicated. When replacing a cracked - damaged glass, it is crucial to understand what glue to use and how to carry out the gluing process. In this blog, we will explore these issues along with the various aspects that are important when gluing car windows.

Gluing car windows: What we need to know

Why is gluing car windows so important? The windscreen performs many key functions in our vehicle and therefore protects us from wind, rain, insects, and is also an essential element of the passive safety system. With proper gluing, the glass is responsible for about 30% of the rigidity of the car roof structure. That is why it is so important that the glass is glued professionally and with the use of appropriate materials.

Glass glue: which is the best?

The main material we use to glue car windows are polyurethane adhesives. These are usually one-component adhesives that harden by absorbing moisture, creating strong, tight and weather-resistant adhesives that adhere well to the glass surface. These adhesives are very durable and resistant to water, road salt and temperature changes.

One of the most frequently recommended car window adhesives by professionals is Teroson Bond 480 . It is a polyurethane adhesive with a short drying time, which allows for quick replacement of the glass and a short waiting time for full driving after installation. This adhesive is very durable, flexible and perfectly adheres to various surfaces, which guarantees a long-term and safe connection between the glass and the bodywork.

Glass adhesives are available in many variants, differing in drying time, strength, flexibility or consistency. Choosing the right adhesive depends on many factors, such as the type of vehicle, type of glass, weather conditions or user preferences. For example, adhesives with a short drying time are preferred in glass services where speed of customer service is a priority, while adhesives with a long drying time may be preferred by self-installers who need more time to precisely position the glass.

Gluing car windows: an overview of the steps

When replacing the windshield adhesive, you will need the following tools and supplies:

  1. New car windshield: Make sure you have the right windshield that fits your vehicle.

  2. Glue for windshields: There are many different brands and types, but it's important to use a glue that's made for car windows.

  4. Scraper: You will need a scraper to remove the old glue from the frame.

  5. Isopropyl alcohol and cloths: These items are essential for cleaning the frame after removing the old adhesive.

  6. Work gloves: Glass can be very sharp, so work gloves are necessary to protect your hands.

  7. Glass Sticking Tape: You can use this to hold your new glass in place while the glue dries. HPX 6200 tape

Remember that safety comes first, so always wear proper eye and hand protection when working with glass and sharp tools.

If you have all the necessary accessories, you can start replacing the glass:

Unpack your new windshield to remove dirt on both sides with Teroson Bond professional glass cleaner.

Inspect your new windshield for damage and scratches and make sure it fits.

Wipe the joint with the Teroson Bond Sponge placed between the glass and the car body.

Reapply Teroson Bond Glass Cleaner with a lint-free cloth, wiping in one direction.

Use Teroson Bond Easy Cut to remove/cut the old windshield.

Remove dirt from the frame with Teroson Bond Glass.

Use a primer if the paint is damaged. Apply it with a wool marker, one bond line, leave for 2 minutes to evaporate.

Specify the height of the footer in the roof surface. Where the roof is the same size as the glass, adjust the applicator nozzle to the correct height: final bead height = flange height, plus 2 mm.

Prepare a cartridge with glue and apply it to the dispensing gun.

Apply glue. Move the nozzle at right angles to the level of the screen. It is recommended that the adhesive be squeezed out evenly in one pass.

Install a new windshield. Insert the new windshield carefully into the body frame. Use the Teroson VR 5080 repair tape to temporarily secure the position of the glass. Install the attachment

The time of curing the glue lasts 60 minutes, after this time the windshield is ready to drive.

Make sure all parameters are ready for safe driving.

Remember that you should always follow the glass and adhesive manufacturer's recommendations when replacing. If you have any doubts, it is always worth seeking advice from a specialist.

Magic window glue: is it true?

Is there really such a thing as a "magic" window glue? The answer is ambiguous. The term "magic glass glue" is often used as a marketing slogan to describe products that offer exceptionally quick and effective solutions to car window problems. Professionals usually recommend proven brands and products that are well rated in the industry. Even though some products may seem "magical" due to their effectiveness, it is always worth understanding how they work and how to use them correctly, rather than relying on magic. Professional repair of damaged glass is guaranteed by using a professional service.

Summary

Gluing a car window is a process that requires attention and precision. Remember to always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions when using the glass adhesive. It is also important to always use professional services if you are unsure of your abilities. Without proper experience and skills, there is a risk that the repair may not be done properly, which can lead to further problems.
